Heceta Head Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters on the rugged Oregon coast. The 56-foot tall lighthouse shines a beam visible for 21 nautical miles Heceta Head is named after Bruno de Heceta, the Portuguese captain of a Spanish ship, who first sighted the cape in 1775. Construction was completed in 1894. A wagon trail was built to haul in construction materials. Some things, including the 2-ton Fresnel lens array manufactured in Birmingham, England, were floated to shore from ships. When the lighthouse was electrified and automated, the Keepers House was no longer needed. It is now a bed and breakfast.
