  • Santa Maria Mater Domini Church. The sanctuary of Santa Maria Mater Domini is a parish church, located in the town of Mesagne, in Materdona street. Inside there is the medieval icon depicting the Madonna and Child, the object of the worship of the faithful. Historical notes and description: The Mater Domini church was erected between 1598 and 1605, to be worthy of the image of the Virgin with the Child, considered miraculous. This paint, medieval and originally located in a simple newsstand, would, according to the testimony of a peasant, sweat abundantly on March 17, 1598. The Sanctuary, erected by Evangelio and Michele Profilo, covers, in Renaissance style, was completed by the construction of the majolica dome on cylindrical drum, erected between 1688 and 1740. The interior features a Greek cross plant. On the main altar, Baroque, is the Marian icon, of medieval origins but repainted by the mesmerizing painter Gian Pietro Zullo after 1598. In Zullo (lived between 1557 and 1619) is also attributed the canvas depicting the Incredulity of san Tommaso. The dome plumes are adorned with the images of the Evangelists, an unknown artist, reproductions of the Dominicans, present in the Roman church of Sant'Andrea della Valle. Also worth mentioning is the statue of Saint Francis of Assisi, in stone dating from the beginning of the 17th century. Whikipedia info, and Google translation.
