An example of some of the architectural design in the Catacombs of Paris. (These are «les catacombs de Paris». From 1786 to 1859, the city of Paris transferred 6 million bodies in several overcrowded cemeteries to a massive network (186 miles) of underground tunnels. We are 100 feet below land in this photo, below even the Paris subway system. Bodies were stacked on top of each other, after a process of cleaning their bones and religious rituals. The intention was to allow semi-public access from the start, for loved ones to pay their respects. Now, the entire public can explore a 1 mile portion of the network. #Paris)
