  • Spherie of King Herod's Amphitheatre at Caesarea Built in King Herod's time (built between 22-10 BCE), it is the most ancient theatre found in Israel. It had two cavea (seating areas) and could accommodate 4,000 spectators. Apparently offended by the licentious entertainment the theatre offered, the Christian Byzantine rulers closed it down in the 5th c. CE. Today the theatre has been restored and is the location of outdoor concerts, plays, and operas. This spherie is from a location at the top center of the amphitheatre.
