Wilson was a medical doctor, chemist, professor of Technology at Edinburgh University and the first director of the Industrial Museum of Scotland. On his gravestone is a unique symbol that he created as the ‘logo’ for this museum. The circle represents the industry of the world, displayed within the museum. Inside it, the three side of the triangle stands for the mineral, vegetable, and animal kingdoms, the raw materials of industry. The open hand symbolises the transformation of materials into new forms, while the eye guides this Transformation.
