1869 Tunnel Shaft Rotherhithe The Thames Tunnel was sold in 1865 and the elaborate staircases at Rotherhithe were removed. The Tunnel had been bought by the East London Railway for £200,000 – a poor deal for the Thames Tunnel Company shareholders but a bargain for the railway which acquired what was at the time the most easterly crossing of the River Thames. Sadly though, the magnificent tunnel shaft at Rotherhithe was not part of the railwaymen’s plans.
