Excerpt: "The Chain Lakes and nearby Long Lake served as the water supply for Halifax from 1848 until 1977. As Halifax grew, the Chain Lakes water supply became more challenged to meet the water demands of a growing city. To meet these demands Spruce Hill Lake was added to the Chain Lakes System in 1869, Big Indian Lake in 1942 and finally Otter Lake in 1961. In 1977 the Pockwock Water Supply was established to serve the Halifax, Bedford, Sackville and Timberlea Areas."
