Studio 44 was founded in 2003 by a group of Stockholm-based artists with the aim of creating an independent, non-commercial space for contemporary art. The space is shared with CFF (Centrum för fotografi – Center for Photography) and situated in Kapsylen, a cultural cooperative and former cap factory (”The Cap”) in Södermalm, Stockholm. Studio 44 is a dynamic organization, characterized by its openness to different forms of expression. There are around 30 visual artists/members who collaborate in managing the space and show their own work on a regular basis. The gallery also invites artists from outside the gallery in Sweden and from all over the world to participate in themed exhibitions. The work process with the gallery is organic and democratic, allowing different approaches to exist side by side. Looking to the future, Studio 44 wishes to develop its curatorial focus further, producing exhibitions that make connections between the members’ work while also including a wider artistic community.
