Fireweed: Fireweed is a common pioneer species that colonizes a recently burned area.
Black-backed Woodpecker: Wildfires can provide new foraging opportunities for wildlife. Woodpeckers like this black-backed woodpecker are often visitors of burnt forests as they can find many insects inside the burnt trees.
Standing trees: Because this area was only recently burned, the dead trees are still standing. These trees pose a hazard for people working in the forest as they can fall unexpectedly. If we were to return to this burned forest in several years, most of these trees would have fallen down and would be rotting into the forest floor. This rotting dead wood creates habitats for plants, insects, and fungi, and cycles nutrients back into the soil.
