Named for the French East India Company (Compagnie française pour le commerce des Indes orientales), Le jardin de la Compagnie (Company Gardens) has been the site of the first performance hall and a market. It was also the cite of a cemetery, Cimetière de l'Enfoncement or Sinking Cemetery so named because the site is located between two water courses and was originally a swamp. The earliest settlers buried their dead here until 1771 when the Western Cemetery was created. The Gardens continue to play an important role in the life of the island and are the frequent site of political demonstrations. Many statues commemorate individuals who have been deemed to have played an important role in the life of the island whilst other memorials remind us of past significant events.
