Saint Anthony Bronze, 1953 Ivan Meštrović The Christ Child once miraculously appeared in the arms of a Franciscan friar, Saint Anthony of Padua. Here, Saint Anthony holds the infant Jesus, surrounded by symbols of the Gospel authors: the angel, lion, ox, and eagle, which represent Matthew, Luke, Mark, and John. Simplified lines in this sculpture seem to suit the depiction of an austere friar. The stylized sunburst and winged animals reflect Meštrović's interest in Near Eastern art.
