Samuel Rajasuriar Photographer Affectionately known by the community as ‘Uncle Sam’, Samuel runs a photography and print shop. At any time you walk into the shop you can be sure to encounter people from all walks of life, queuing to print, have documents signed or to simply catch up. You can see the faces of his most loyal customers on his ‘beauty board’ plastered to the wall of his shop, showing his customers faces caricatured in photographic print. Samuel migrated with his family from Sri Lanka. After finishing year 12 he became a sales representative for a surgical instruments company. Having a passion for photography he decided to change tack and started a photographic apprenticeship in King Cross. He learnt many skills in that role. Since 1985 he has been running a bustling business in Bankstown. In the time he has been here he has built up tremendous relationships with the community and he has noticed dramatic changes. “When I first started the new migrants were Vietnamese, and then the Indians began arriving, many doctors and nurses and now the African nations are coming in. I get to meet every one of them as I am a JP, I witness and certify their documents. I photograph customers weddings, do their printing, I get to know them and their families” “ It gives me a huge buzz, I love it, when people come in to pick up their photographs. It makes them smile, and that makes me happy. Most of my customers are long term customers and they have become my friends. Where else on earth would you find all nationalities like here in Bankstown?”
