Phat Trieu Vietnamese Baker Phat has been baking delicious cakes and Vietnamese sweets, and running the family business in Bankstown since 1986. Phat arrived in Australia as a refugee from South Vietnam in 1978. He first arrived in Adelaide and then travelled up to Sydney. He loves Bankstown for all the different people and started this business to make a good life for him and his family. “Bankstown is a very multicultural place, where you can meet people of different ethnicities everyday. On one side is the Western shopping (Bankstown Central) and on the other end are the Asian shops (Saigon Place) and on the West Terrace are the Middle Eastern shops. Where else could you find so many cultural influences in one suburb?” “In Vietnam, like any communist country, life was quite difficult for everyone. There were limited opportunities and even if you worked hard there was no guarentee of a prosperous future. But in Australia we believe that if you worked hard enough you could achieve anything. It was easier to grasp opportunities here. There was more freedom to do what you wanted to do. He learnt how to bake from his father who was also baker in South Vietnam. From this early childhood experience Phat developed a passion for baking cakes. “I have been making cakes from a long, long time ago, when I was young I learnt to make cakes from my father.” The bakery has the same warmth and welcome as Phat’s smile. As well as being treated to delicious sweets you will be sure to hear a joke and have a laugh.
