Hanan Ibrahim Master of Yeeros Hanan has lived in Bankstown since 1985 “I love Bankstown and I will never move out of here. I feel part of the community here”. Hanan is Egyptian Lebanese and runs a Greek restaurant called The Master of Yeeros. Hanan started her business in Bankstown in 2003 wanting to work near to her home and her family. She loves having a shop in the heart of the Bankstown, in the centre of it all. From here she has watched the community grow and become more diverse with African communities settling in the area, like her neighbour Martha. “I love my customers and talking to them, I know all my customers, everything about them -how many kids they have, how many times they have been married!” “People think Bankstown isn’t safe, that everyone is sick or crazy in Bankstown, I say: why do you say that? Everywhere there is trouble, it’s every where if you want to find it. Not Bankstown, it’s a normal area, like any other areas you see.” Hanan would like to see more of her Egyptian culture reflected in Bankstown. “My house is full of beautiful Eqyptian things and I would like to see the culture on the street through carnivals and second-hand markets. I also have a dream to use my skills and become an interpreter to translate Arabic”.
