Team 9 Lives Liam O’Brien, Kevin Ngo, Justin Killack Founded in 2004, Team 9Lives is an organisation devoted to Parkour. Their approach to classes and training combines not only a physical conditioning, but also mental and spiritual components to train their inner selves.Justin, Liam and Kevin are all local parkour practitioners and practise around the Bankstown CBD. Justin was born in Revesby and brought Parkour to Bankstown by training here and as a result has attracted many young people to the area. The biggest motivator for Justin to teach Parkour is satisfaction that comes from seeing people break mental barriers and do what they didn’t believe possible. Liam started coming to Bankstown from Mt Druit specifically for the Parkour classes. Liam moved to Western Sydney from Ballarat. Although he didn’t know anyone to begin with, he quickly became part of the Parkour community. “Bankstown has totally unique cultural demographics, it is so diverse compared to Ballarat where it is all white and middle class. Parkour gave me the opportunity to train together with people and build bonds together. Through training together you encourage eachother, make friends and make a community. In Parkour you really have to work together to overcome fear and help each other out.” Kevin grew up in Bankstown and now works at Bankstown Youth Development Services. He loves living and working in Bankstown and enjoys the mixing of cultures here. He is disappointed with the bad press Bankstown receives and how it is perceived from the outside. “Perception of Bankstown created by the media is always in a negative light because that’s what’s easy to do and gets the most hits. It is a real shame. But I love the fact you can go into a shopping mall and see an Arab family eating sushi and an Asian family eating big kebabs.”
