This is Sacsaywaman, about 1000 feet higher in elevation than the city of Cusco. The ancient city of Cusco was shaped in the form of a puma, or mountain lion, and the large jagged stone walls are the puma's teeth. The field below the jagged walls is the location of a terrible battle fought between the Incas and the Spanish. The Incas were defeated and from here, they fled farther into the Sacred Valley. The Incas were not permitted to collect their dead in order to bury them, and our guide told us that Sacsaywaman means something like "the place were the crows eat well".
