My annual October drive into the nearby Elkhorn Mountains in Northeast Oregon to see the fall colors. Scattered among the other conifers are the Western Larch trees, more commonly called “Tamaracks.” They are deciduous conifers. In October the chlorophyll in their needles breaks down and they turn from green to brilliant gold. In November the needles fall off and they grow back in the spring.
