You are now standing in the forest restoration area on the western slopes of Puʻu Waʻawaʻa. This area was open grassland prior to 2005 when a protective fence was built to keep out non-native, hoofed animals. Trees were planted starting in 2006. Stop here to talk to Edith Adkins, manager of the Napuʻu Conservation Project, and then continue on into the forest to find more rare plant species.
