Anne Sherwood Pundyk An artist based in Manhattan and Mattituck, NY, Anne Sherwood Pundyk paints large-scale abstract paintings on stained, cropped and stitched unstretched canvas. “[Pundyk’s] painting is both intuitive and remarkably self-aware…the head vying with the heart,” writes art critic Seph Rodney. In both her large paintings and smaller works on paper, the paint is free to flee across the surface or to soak into the fabric or paper. Employing simple tools such as string, a tack and straight edge, she draws geometric shapes, which create flashpoints of color poised at various depths in the painted space. In her photographs called “Paint Box Prints,” an open, handwritten diary is nested within multi-colored digital and woven surfaces. Growing up, Pundyk spent many, joyful hours, often with her cousin Michael Kennedy, observing her grandmother drawing and painting and has modeled her own work ethic after Jones'. When describing a commission for a school, Jones once said, “It felt good to make a large, colorful painting with no one telling me what to do.” Pundyk brings this sentiment to life in her studio.
