(2022), (2022) by James Raphael Tabbush Single channel video The films and re/create two snapshots of contemporary boredom, as if we are stumbling across somebody’s zero subscriber YouTube channel, or the depths of their camera roll. The figures we see seem to be performing to an audience of nobody, ignored by their family or by their employers, soothing themselves through the act of filming. What we can see in these short clips is totally inconsequential, nonsensical, low quality, strangely forming and reforming its own surface, as if the imagery is being created as we watch, as if an artificial intelligence is learning what it means to be bored. It is hard to know what kind of images these are, and what kind of role we, as the camera, the viewer, the screen or the audience, are playing. is an artist and writer based in London. His work includes digital, filmic, written and sonic elements, sometimes within the form of installations and more recently online work, some of it under the name Unthought ASMR. He attended the MFA program at Goldsmiths, University of London, previously studying painting at City and Guilds of London Art School. He has participated in group shows and residencies internationally, and he curated exhibitions from 2015-18 under the name Pipeline Projects.
