Cider press Whitman Agricultural Company St. Louis, Missouri Oak and cast iron; ca. 1876 Courtesy of the Moody Family Collection The maker of this fruit press, the Whitman Agricultural Company manufactured agricultural and sawmill machinery. After 1900, their catalogue diversified with the addition of air compressors, gasoline engines, hoisting machinery, jacks, and power pumps. This cider press was owned for many years by Walter Johnston, a farmer from Macomb, Missouri, and was used to make apple cider in the fall. The press was then gifted by Johnston to his grandson, Walter Moody. While this particular press was never used for winemaking, cider presses can be used on fruits other than apples, including grapes.
