Blackwall Basin has been designed as 'Barge Village' and is one of the Canal & River Trust's premium mooring sites in London catering for barges up to 38m. There are 20 large berths suitable for larger barges and a further 7 narrowboat/small barge berths - all with views of the Canary Wharf's skyline. Blackwall takes its name from the colour of the river wall and goes back to the at least the 14th century. Due to its sheltered location and the curve in the river, it became ta major boat-building area. Billingsgate is nearby and is the United Kingdom's largest inland fish market. An average of 25,000 tonnes of fish and fish products are sold through its merchants each year. It is also open to the public but you need to be there in the early morning
